“Hey, I think she’s waking up” a familiar boy’s voice said. I let out a loud groan. My head ached and I felt as if I had just been hit by a car. My eyes fluttered open but shut instantly again as the bright fluorescent lights blinded my vision. “Oh thank goodness you’re awake Mona!” the boy cried again, it was Adrian. I opened my eyes again, shielding them with my right hand.

I was lying in a small white bed with metal hand rails down each side. The walls were white which matched the bed sheets, the beds were perfectly aligned against each wall and they were all empty except for mine. There was a small window near the far wall which was letting barely any sunlight in.

“Why am I in the hospital?” I asked, my voice sounding croaky. My throat felt horribly dry. How long have I been out for? I thought. A burning pain shot through my head. I gripped the hand rails and sat up as slowly as possibly but I still felt dizzy.

Small, light footsteps cam closer and a young nurse stood by my bed, her black hair tied up in a bun, she wore a light pink high collared nurses dress, near her nose on the right side of her face was a small beauty mark. Tucked under her left arm was a clipboard and in her left hand was a white plastic cup filled with water.

I took the cup and drank from it greedily and I felt relief in my throat. After swallowing all the water I handed her back the cup with a croaky “Thank you”. The nurse mumbled something to Adrian before walking out of the room.

“You’re in the hospital because you collapsed after Amy was struck by lightning. You should have seen it! Your hair was sticking up on end and your fingers were emitting sparks! It was so cool!” Adrian sounded like an excited little boy, next thing I expected him to do was jump up and down.

Shock suddenly hit me as I remembered Amy. I jumped up from the bed, ready to run out of the room but Adrian gripped my wrists firmly, his touch warm against my cold wrists. ‘"Hey Mona, calm down. She’s fine. Amy is down the hall in another room. The doctor was surprised that she didn’t die from the lightning but she’s just resting so calm down otherwise you’ll hurt yourself.”

He gave me another one of his trademark smiles before kissing my forehead. A clam feeling took over from the worried feeling that had once filled me. “The doctor said that you can go home after you wake up.” He said calmly, wrapping his arm around my waist. He held me close to him and walked with me out of the hospital.

On our way out, the young nurse from before waved to Adrian in a flirty way but he ignored it. We walked down the paved road, the afternoon sun hung low in the sky. “You were out for 2 hours Mona, the whole time that nurse was trying to flirt with me but I ignored it. She looks familiar though. I think she’s Claire’s sister. So, do you remember anything before you collapsed?”

I pursed my lips, the headache had died down and wasn’t as severe as before. I couldn’t remember anything the memory was all fuzzy and blurry. I shook my head in response to Adrian’s question.

An awkward silence filled the air and within a few minutes we had arrived at my front door step. Adrian smiled before saying that he hoped I would feel better and walked off. Our house was a small sized house. It was made of dark, grey stone and had a white roof. Nina’s bedroom was at the front of the house, Amy’s is next to Nina’s and mine is in between Amy and Lo’s. We have a small bathroom and laundry near the back of the house and our lounge room is near the kitchen.

I walked through the front door and was approached by a cheerful, skipping Lo. She smiled at me and handed me a small, handmade card which had various fairy pictures on the front. In the card she had written: To Mona, Hope you feel better. I love you so much! Hopefully we will find some fairies some day! Love Lo.

A grin crossed my face and I gave her a large hug. “Can we go fairy hunting now? Like you promised?” she pleaded, our eyes meeting. My older sister, Nina stood in the doorway of her room and let out a small chuckle. Her black hair was tied up in a short ponytail; she wore a black high collared t-shirt and blue jeans. She shoved her glasses up her nose slightly.

“Lo are you sure that’s a good idea? Mona still not might be feeling well.” I shook my head in response. “I feel fine, honest!” Nina let out a small sigh and moved back into her room, shutting the door behind her. I felt a tug on my top and glanced back to Lo before following her down the hallway and out into our back garden.

Our garden resembled a large jungle. We had a small grassed area and behind it were a red pebbled area filled with overgrown plants. Lo smiled at me. “Alright! I’ll go to the right end of the ‘forest’ and you can go down the left side!” she said, pointing to each side. I nodded in agreement. I never liked seeing Lo upset or sad. I was closer to her then Nina or Amy.

Lo ran down into her side of the ‘jungle’ and I ran down to my side, trying to avoid the various branches from trees which would scratch my arms every so often. I heard an excited cry from Lo five minutes later. I could see her through the trees. “Look! I found a fairy!” she screamed. My body tensed as I realised that it was in fact a bee.

“Lo! Don’t touch it, it’s a bee!” I screeched, but it was too late. She had already touched it. She let out a painful cry as the bee stung her and it dropped to the ground dead. I rushed over to her and picked her up, slinging her over my shoulder.

I ran quickly back into the house, Lo continued to cry her face was red. My head ached still from before and was affecting my judgement. I ran into the bathroom, trying to find a pair of tweezers and calm down Lo at the same time. I couldn’t find them and swore loudly under my breath.

I left Lo sitting on the bathroom bench and ran into Amy’s room remembering she had them last. I fumbled around her things and finally found them and ran back into the bathroom where a distressed Nina stood trying to calm Lo.

She snatched the tweezers off me and removed the stinger from Lo’s finger, kissed her forehead and told her to go to her room to rest. Lo nodded obediently and rushed off, her face streaming with tears.
Nina stood there, hands on her hips. “What the hell were you thinking!” she cried angrily. “I-I…” but before I could reply she continued to rant on. “You should have stopped her and looked after her! Why didn’t you stop her!” she screeched making me flinch.

“Besides this you also hurt Amy today and she’s in hospital because of you!” she screamed, tears streaming from her eyes. “I know what happened and it’s happened before!” I froze, unable to say something.

“W-When you were little; you were roaming around the garden with dad. All of a sudden he was struck down by lightning. Your fingertips were emitting sparks and your hair was standing on end. He died in hospital later that night...” Nina sobbed and held her head. I stood there, frozen. “I-I killed him?” I said out loud in disbelief. Nina shot me a glare. “Yes you did for Christ’s sake!” she screamed, I could see that she was growing angrier by the minute.

“T-The whole Amy thing was an accident! Plus she said I was pregnant! Lo’s was an accident too!” I pleaded, trying to calm her down. Nina glared and me again and that’s when she slapped me. I hit the floor, holding my burning red cheek. “J-Just get out...” she growled through clenched teeth. I nodded and jumped up from the floor and ran to my room, avoiding an upset Lo who stood in her doorway watching me.

I slammed my door behind me; my room was small and efficient. It has a small bed by the wall and a bedside table with a small lamp nearby. On the far wall was a large bookcase filled with various books. A small study desk was next to it. My walls were painted a light green and the carpet was a dark purple colour. On one wall was a large windowsill which had a small seating area on it. I moved to it silently, curling up in a ball and emitting small sobs before bursting out into loud tears. The clouds outside turned grey and the pitter patter sound of rain covered my loud crying.
